Learn MoreDetailed Curriculum Overview
The academic framework at LHMC is aligned with the Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) guidelines by the National Medical Commission. The MBBS curriculum is divided into three phases: Pre-clinical, Para-clinical, and Clinical. Pre-clinical subjects include Anatomy, Physiology, and Biochemistry, taught over 1 year. Para-clinical subjects such as Pathology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, and Forensic Medicine span 1.5 years. Clinical subjects like Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, and Obstetrics occupy the final 2 years, followed by a compulsory rotating internship of 1 year.
Postgraduate programs involve a structured schedule of ward duties, outpatient clinics, emergency postings, and academic sessions. Residents are required to present cases, attend seminars, and participate in research. The college also emphasizes skill development through simulation labs, where students practice procedures on mannequins before real-patient contact. Continuous assessment includes internal exams, logbooks, and formative tests, ensuring comprehensive evaluation.
LHMC encourages interdisciplinary learning through integrated teaching sessions, where faculty from different departments collaborate on topics like infectious diseases or oncology. The college also offers elective periods where students can pursue interests in specialties like Dermatology, Psychiatry, or Community Medicine. International collaborations with universities in the UK, USA, and Australia provide exchange programs, giving students global exposure.
To support academics, the Central Library houses over 50,000 books, 200 print journals, and access to online databases like PubMed, Scopus, and UpToDate. Digital resources include e-books, video lectures, and virtual dissection tables. The library remains open 24/7 during exam periods, and librarians offer training on research methodology and referencing.
Research & Innovation
LHMC is at the forefront of medical research, contributing to advancements in healthcare and policy.
Key Research Areas
Our research focuses on both basic and translational medicine, addressing public health challenges in India and globally. Major areas include Infectious Diseases (e.g., Tuberculosis, HIV, COVID-19), Non-communicable Diseases (Diabetes, Cardiovascular disorders), Maternal and Child Health, Neurosciences, and Cancer Biology. The college has received grants from agencies like the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Department of Biotechnology (DBT), and international bodies like WHO and NIH.
Recent projects include a multi-center study on drug-resistant TB, development of low-cost diagnostic kits for dengue, and community-based interventions to reduce neonatal mortality. LHMC researchers have published over 500 papers in indexed journals in the past five years, with many studies influencing national health programs. The college also holds annual research symposia where students and faculty present their work, fostering a culture of inquiry.
Innovation is encouraged through the Technology Incubation Center, which supports startups in medical devices and digital health. For instance, a team from LHMC developed a portable ECG monitor that is now used in rural clinics. Collaborations with industry partners like Tata Trusts and Philips enable practical application of research findings. The college also files patents regularly, with 15 patents granted in the last decade.
Ethical research is paramount, overseen by the Institutional Ethics Committee (IEC), which reviews all proposals involving human or animal subjects. Training in research ethics is mandatory for all postgraduate students. LHMC also promotes open science, with many datasets shared publicly to accelerate discovery.
